Bird Lives! A Celebration of Charlie Parker at 100 featuring Alexa Tarantino

Jazz Arts Group celebrates the music of saxophonist Charlie Parker in his 100th year with NYC-based, rising star saxophonist Alexa Tarantino along with standout Columbus Jazz Orchestra saxophonists Michael Cox, Pete Mills and Shawn Wallace, and trumpeter Dwight Adams. Longtime CJO bassist Chris Berg anchors the lineup along with Marion Felder on drums and show-stopping Julliard-trained, Columbus-based pianist Micah Thomas.

The music for Bird Lives! includes selections from Charlie Parker’s Grammy Award Hall of Fame recording “Bird with Strings.” We are excited to partner with members of the McConnell Arts Center Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Antoine J. Clark and featuring Devin Copfer, Violin I; Ella Pittsford, Violin II; Elizabeth Mandić-Nowac, Violin III, Meagan Cramm, Viola; Jane Van Voorhis, Cello; Brad Walsh, Oboe & English Horn; and Tiffany Jones, Harp.

Charlie Parker’s association with the great Dizzy Gillespie will be celebrated with a grand finale jam session in the spirit of the famed Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts created by jazz impresario Norman Granz. This year marks the 75th anniversary of Granz’s Jazz at the Philharmonic event that featured the towering triumvirate of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Lester Young.

About the Series: Our Jazz at the Lincoln Theatre series showcases both established nationally-recognized artists and local musicians, and includes curated events, intimate small ensemble performances and educational activities that reach into the community through concerts, workshops and artist residencies.
